Who I am
Let’s face it: making career pivots can be difficult. But it’s necessary in order to pursue what truly brings you joy.
Art has always been the heartbeat of my life. From drawing and playing instruments as a child to selling artwork during college, creating has always been a source of joy and fulfillment. However, practicality and the pursuit of stability led to a career in nursing. Art remained a hobby, and nursing became the focal point of my life. Although nursing fulfilled my passion for helping others and fascination with the human body, the pandemic and subsequent travels as a registered nurse showed that the world had much more to offer.
I learned that life isn't solely about financial gain, but rather about following one's passions and purpose. Nursing is tiresome, stressful, and disheartening, but it taught me many valuable lessons and helped me develop many skills that have proven useful in my career change. Alongside my nursing journey, I have realized my life has been filled with experiences that have been pointing me to a new creative path the whole time. When the world of event planning and coordination as a career was introduced into my life, it excitingly seemed like a natural fit. Below, you can explore how some of my unique experiences have yielded important skills.
Travel nursing
-
I have experience in negotiating pay packages & contacts, booking lodging, coordinating domestic/international travel, and researching new cities.
-
Nursing yields an ever-changing environment. Every work day is fast-paced, which requires me to think on my toes and adapt to whatever comes my way.
-
A registered nurse is a part of a care team, consisting of many other health professions. Coordinating care for patients with the collaboration of other care team members is an integral part of patient care. Without the help and expertise of others, nothing would get done.
-
Direct patient care requires me to be thorough, concise, and effective with my communication in order to ensure that everyone is on the same page.
-
Multi-tasking is inevitable in a typical nursing shift. As a nurse, I have learned how to manage multiple tasks at once without compromising safety and accuracy.
Event planning
-
Event planning first came into my life when I took the position of Orientation Coordinator at my college. Alongside 12 others, I planned and coordinated the 4-day orientation program at my university for over 500 students for 2 years in a row.
-
When planning events for large groups, weddings, and vacations for friends, managing time is one of the biggest skills I have developed. Building itineraries that flow well and allow ample time for each activity is one of my fortes.
-
One of my favorite things to do in the planning process. Through my daily life and professional experience, I have acquired skills in researching venues and booking reservations for large groups for social events.
-
After planning a bachelorette part for 12 women and working large weddings, I have learned that putting out fires is a part of the process. Effective communication, respect, and fearlessness is crucial in exercising this skill.
-
As an Administrative Assistant for a boutique wedding business, I have gained experience with vendor contacting and management. Working with other vendors is the glue that holds large events together.
Art & creativity
-
As a visual artist, perfectionism is in my blood. Because of that, I am very detail-oriented. To create a beautiful and seamless event, one needs to think of every detail, whether it be in the visual aesthetic or the logistic flow.
-
Artists inevitably learn what is pleasing to the eye. My drawing, painting, and graphic design projects have taught me the importance of color theory, spacial awareness, and the overall feel of a piece.
-
Art teaches you to take risks. I have learned that it does not always matter if an art project makes sense, as long as it pleases your soul to create it and others will see the beauty in whatever you create. Creating art means taking a leap of faith.
-
I pride myself on keeping up with current trends in the wedding industry, interior design, and graphic design. Having a creative background has given me an eye for quality design.
